How to Talk to Your Teens About Digital Wellness Without the Eye Rolls

I know how overwhelming it can feel to start a conversation about digital wellness with your tween or teen. It’s such a tricky topic, right? Sometimes, it feels like you’re walking on eggshells, hoping not to spark a battle—or worse, get a blank stare followed by, “Ugh, Mom, you just don’t get it!”

Trust me, I’ve been there. As a teacher, it was much easier. My 5th to 8th graders were eager to listen and share stories about their online lives. They’d go home excited to tell their parents what they’d learned. But with my own kids? That took a lot more patience, a shift in my approach, and a hefty dose of humility.

The good news? It’s absolutely possible to reach them—even if you feel like you’ve missed your window. And once you do, it’s amazing what those conversations can lead to.

Why Digital Wellness Matters More Than Ever

We all know technology is a huge part of our lives—and it’s here to stay. That’s why it’s so important to help our kids develop healthy digital habits now.

I’ll be the first to admit I struggled with this. I questioned myself daily. I was glued to my phone, modeling exactly the kind of behavior I didn’t want for my kids. And let’s be honest—sometimes, it was easier to let an app like OurPact set boundaries than to have the tough conversations myself.

But here’s what I realized: by relying solely on rules and restrictions, I was missing an opportunity to teach my kids why digital wellness matters. They needed me to guide them, not just control them.

What Teens Really Need from Us

If you’re worried it’s too late to start these conversations, I promise you—it’s not. Teens are curious, thoughtful, and (surprisingly!) open to learning about digital wellness when it’s done the right way. They love facts and stats more than you’d expect. Show them a study or share some real-world examples, and suddenly, they’re engaged.

And here’s the kicker: they don’t hate information. They hate lectures. If you come at them with genuine curiosity and make it a two-way conversation, they’ll open up.

Have you ever watched them scroll through TikTok or Instagram Reels? A lot of what they watch teaches them something—facts, skills, or life hacks. They’re soaking up knowledge all the time. We just need to meet them where they are.

It’s About More Than Screen Time

When we think of digital wellness, it’s easy to focus on screen time limits. And yes, those are important. But digital wellness goes so much deeper.

Here are a few other key areas to explore with your teen:

Lead by Example

I’ll be honest—this was the hardest part for me. Between juggling mom life and teaching in 1:1 device schools, I wasn’t exactly modeling digital wellness. My wake-up call came when I realized my kids were quick to call me out. “But YOU do it!” they’d say.

So, I started making changes. I took breaks from my phone, became more mindful of how I spent my screen time, and set boundaries for myself. And guess what? They noticed.

Start the Conversation Early and Often

One of the best ways to approach digital wellness is to start talking about it before problems arise. Ask your teen about their favorite apps. Show interest in their online life. When I started doing this, my kids opened up in ways I didn’t expect. They showed me cool app features, asked me to send Snap “hellos” to their friends, and even started teaching me things.

By creating a safe, open space for these conversations, you’re not just teaching your teen about digital wellness—you’re strengthening your relationship with them.

It’s Never Too Late to Start

Whether you’re a parent, guardian, or teacher, it’s never too late to prioritize digital wellness. These conversations can be challenging, but they’re worth it. By showing your teen that you care and are willing to learn alongside them, you’ll help them develop habits that will serve them for life.

Remember: the goal isn’t perfection—it’s progress. And you don’t have to do it alone. There are plenty of resources available to help you along the way (hint: I have a few to share!).
