Empowering Our Teens: Navigating Technology for Their Bright Future

As parents and guardians of tweens and teens, we are witnesses to the ever-evolving landscape of technology, and boy does it change quickly! In this digital age, technology is an integral part of our lives, whether we like it or not, and it's essential that we guide our children to harness its potential for their benefit. In this blog post, I will explore two crucial topics that revolve around digital wellness and preparedness for the future: envisioning technology's positive impact and equipping our teens for the tech-savvy world they will encounter. If you've been following me up to now, you know I try to show a different perspective on tech use in our kids' lives.

Envisioning Technology's Potential for Our Teens

As we raise our tweens and teens, it's essential to take a moment to envision the incredible ways technology can support their education, dreams, and talents. Technology is more than just a source of entertainment; it opens doors to a world of knowledge and opportunities.

I think it is easy to blame technology for a lot of our issues with our tweens and teens, but I have to say, a lot of issues arise because, 1) there's no one monitoring from the get-go (it's become a free for all, or babysitter), and 2) there's no one equipping them with the digital citizenship and digital wellness skills they so desperately need for their future (which schools should be A LOT more active in doing). A lot of blame also comes from fear of the unknown. Many parents/guardians just feel like they don't know enough about technology, so they take it away completely. I know there will be some angry parents/guardians out there for what I've just said, but after numerous parent classes, I always receive feedback including, "I just handed it over and thought it would all be OK", or "I just don't know enough and I'm not tech saavy, so it's easier just to ban it in my house."

Technology, when presented correctly and with parameters, has a lot of positive benefits.

Online Education: Embrace the vast array of educational resources available online, such as virtual classrooms, e-learning platforms, and educational apps. With these tools, our teens can explore new subjects, expand their horizons, and cultivate a love for learning. As a teacher in 1:1 device schools for over 12 years, this one is a no brainer. But, again, they need a background in media literacy in order to discern fact from fiction, click bait, etc.

Creative Expression: Encourage your teens to showcase their artistic talents through digital art, graphic design, or creative content creation. Online platforms offer them a stage to share their passions and connect with a global audience. There's the opportunity for growth, expression and bonding over shared interests. There's a way to curate their social media feeds to follow like-minded, positive accounts.

Connecting with a Global Community: Technology enables our teens to connect with like-minded individuals worldwide. Whether it's participating in online forums, joining interest-based communities, or collaborating on international projects, they can foster meaningful connections and grow their networks. Again, we can do this WITH them in the beginning, modeling how to interact online, what to watch out for, what information to disclose and keep private. We need to be more involved early on, so that they have a more critical eye when they're in their online world.

Preparing Our Teens for a Tech-Savvy Future

As our tweens and teens approach college and adulthood, we must ensure they are well-prepared to navigate the tech-savvy world they will encounter. For those who have been sheltered from technology, gradual exposure and guidance are crucial to building their digital literacy and confidence. For me, my three teens, all now in high school, were fortunate enough to grow up in a school that had dedicated lessons and curriculum surrounding digital citizenship and digital wellness. It was a part of every day learning. On top of that, they had me, a digital wellness educator, and at the time, a Common Sense Ambassador for several years. They know the pros and cons, they are aware of the pitfalls, and they know how to navigate with caution. Do they mess up, yes. But at least I know they are ready to be on their own when the time comes.

Digital Literacy: Integrate technology into their daily routines in a controlled and mindful manner. This will help them gain confidence and proficiency in using technology for academic and professional purposes. Teach them how to research, validate sources, check site integrity, etc. They need to be critical thinkers when online. "Where did this information come from?"

Online Safety and Digital Citizenship: Discuss the importance of online safety, privacy, and responsible digital citizenship with your teen. Equipping them with knowledge about potential online risks will empower them to make informed decisions and protect themselves in the digital world. A lot of US schools use Common Sense Media, which is fantastic. But, there's A LOT of schools who really need to take on some sort of digital citizenship program for their students wellbeing. Internationally, there are other various programs in schools as well. It doesn't matter which one, even if they develop their own within school! What matters is consistency of the message.

Parent-Teen Conversations: Encourage open discussions with your teen about their comfort level with technology and any areas they feel they might need support in. Be their guide as they navigate the digital landscape, and show understanding and patience as they learn. Get involved! What do they like? What don't they like? What is their favorite app and why? What value do they find in certain people they follow? The conversation is endless, but the key is to stay involved.

As parents/guardians, we have a unique opportunity to empower our teens through thoughtful technology guidance. By envisioning technology's potential for their growth and preparing them for the tech-driven future, we set them on a path to success in the digital age. Let's continue this journey together, supporting one another as we embrace technology as a tool for empowerment and growth.
